Solar rooftops arriving for bus and train stations in Perth WA
Led by Premier Mark McGowan, Western Australia’s State Government has this week recently announced its plan to overhaul Perth’s bus and train station rooftops with solar panels. The State has been a world leader in its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has kept its economy strong. As a result, WA’s State Government announced a $5.5 billion Recovery Plan in July 2020.
What are the WA Recovery Plan and its aspects?
According to WA’s Recovery Plan, it will provide the state a path to come back from the previous impacts that hit due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This plan further includes a list of the 21 streams that have been set in as a priority and apart from this, all these streams are being supported through the funding process and different resources as well. These lists have covered renewable energy, the new advanced technology, and environmental protection techniques. Now, let us talk about the aspects of the plan, so under the renewable energy and new technologies stream, WA’s State Government has focused on a plan to invest in renewable energy and battery storage for its networks and state-owned assets. Furthermore, the best news till now is that the State is delivering on its plan by announcing a $66.3 million package that also includes:
- $4 million to help in transforming 10 schools into virtual power plants (or VPPs) and
- Over $1.8 million to install solar panels at over 50 bus and train stations rooftops.
Which Stations Are Going to be Solar in Perth WA?
There will be 50 bus and train stations that will be getting rooftop solar installations also up to over 1,000kW worth of solar panels, and the work progress has already begun. So starting with bus stations named Booragoon, Kwinana, Morley, Victoria Park, James Street, Mirrabooka, Henley Brook, and Optus Stadium bus station has completed their solar installation along with work underway at Leederville bus station.
Now, let us look for the train stations. This list provided below will add more stations and is expected to grow in the future, but for now, the stations are:
- Rockingham (complete)
- Currambine (complete)
- East Perth (complete)
- Bull Creek (works underway soon)
- Murdoch (works underway soon)
- Edgewater
- Butler
- Thornlie
- Clarkson
- Leederville
The WA Premier and the Member for Rockingham Mark McGowan said that the energy which has been generated from solar panels at these bus and train stations would be used to power a range of equipment.
